'Another PR Signing...Same Mistake as Ronaldo': ex-Manchester United Player on Benzema-United Transfer Rumours
Former United defender Paul Parker thinks that trying to sign Benzema would be a step backwards for the Red Devils, similar to when the club decided to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back into their ranks.

The goal-scoring woes of Manchester United continue to persist, even at the halfway mark of the season. With marquee singing Rasmus Hojlund struggling to get going and blossom into the number 9 that the club is in desperate need of, United is set to yet again venture out into the transfer market and seek out a solution.

United’s potential transfer target this winter window to solve their problems? Karim Benzema.

Benzema joined Al Ittihad on a free transfer in the 2023 summer transfer window from Real Madrid. He signed a bumper three-year contract with them with wages reported to be €100 million per year, and made for one of the biggest singings of the summer for the Saudi League, who were on a hunt to make their mark on world football.

But now, following the exit of Jordan Henderson earlier this week, it seems as if the Saudi dream is turning into a nightmare with each passing day, as the Frenchman has also been unclear about his future with the Saudi club.

Benzema was reportedly 17 days late to return to Al Ittihad after SPL’s mid-season break and the club officials couldn’t reach him for 10 days (via AFP). He has been linked with Premier League giants Chelsea and Arsenal majorly, but Manchester United have also started to reportedly show interest in the ex-Real Madrid man.

But, not all are happy with the proposed transfer, including former United player defender Paul Parker, who stated that opting for Benzema would be a step backwards for the Red Devils, similar to when the club decided to bring back the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo into their ranks.

“Karim Benzema would be yet another step backward. He would just be another PR signing, and Manchester United definitely doesn’t need that.” stated Parker in conversation with SpilXperten.

“It would just be making the same mistake as before when they brought in Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani, and Cristiano Ronaldo. It would be yet another step backwards… a big mistake”.

Parker requested that the fans and United themselves to keep on investing in Rasmus Hojlund, whose hunger, he deems, will define him to be the future of the club.

“Hojlund is the future, and it would be a big mistake to bring in Benzema, who is not nearly as hungry as Hojlund. I cannot describe his career in words. There are no words big or good enough to describe what he has achieved, but he is finished at the top level”.

Whether or not United go for Benzema is a tale for another day. But, what remains is the fact that there is a pressing need for rejuvenation and reinvention across multiple facets of the club, if the Red Devils plan on challenging for any silverware this season.
