Shikhar Dhawan said that the two former captains had different personalities which also reflected in their captaincy approaches.

Veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan dissected the different captaincy styles of two of the best of India – Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli. The two players revolutionised Indian cricket in their own ways. Dhoni led India to several big accolades including three ICC trophies – 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy. While under Kohli’s captaincy, India reached great heights in Test cricket.

Dhawan made his India debut under Dhoni’s captaincy but played the majority of cricket under Kohli’s captaincy as he shared great camaraderie with both of them.

The veteran opener said that the two former captains had different personalities which also reflected in their captaincy approaches.

“Both MS Dhoni bhai and Virat Kohli have distinct styles of captaincy, shaped by their personalities, approaches to the game, and leadership philosophies. I have played under them & have good relations with them. I think both of them are exceptional cricketers and everyone wants to become like them only,” Dhawan told Times of India.

Talking about Dhoni’s style and approach of captaincy, Dhawan said that the wicketkeeper batter, who currently leads Chennai Super Kings in IPL, trusts his instincts to take the right call in pressure situations.

“Dhoni bhai is known for his calm and composed demeanour on the field, regardless of the match situation. This cool-headed approach has been a hallmark of his captaincy. Dhoni bhai is often praised for his instinctive decision-making. He trusts his cricketing instincts and has a knack for making the right calls, particularly in pressure situations. Dhoni bhai is known for his effective man-management skills. He remains calm under pressure and is supportive of his players, creating a positive team environment,” Dhawan added.

The southpaw also talked about Kohli and said he encouraged the youngsters in the side and backed them to flourish.

“Virat Kohli has cultivated a youthful and energetic team environment. He encourages young talents and is willing to back them, providing opportunities for them to flourish,” he added.

Meanwhile, he also credited Kohli for bringing the fitness revolution to Indian cricket.

“Kohli places a strong emphasis on fitness and conditioning. This focus on physical fitness has become a key aspect of the team culture under his captaincy. Kohli leads from the front with his performances. His aggressive style of batting often sets the tone for the team, and he expects a similar level of intensity from his players,” Dhawan asserted.
