British head-of-state King Charles III, who underwent a procedure for an enlarged prostate recently, has been diagnosed with cancer.

The 75-year-old, who became king upon the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on September 8, 2022, had spent three nights at the hospital in January.

“During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer. His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual,” the Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

“The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.

His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer,” read the statement.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wished the King a full and speedy recovery.

A palace announcement on January 17 said that he had been diagnosed with the condition was a break with a tradition of relative secrecy about the health of the monarch.

Charles wanted to publicise his own case to raise awareness about the condition, which is common in men aged over 50 and affects urination.

Symptoms include a frequent need to pass water and difficulty in fully emptying the bladder.
