Hosts India entered the final as the only unbeaten side of the World Cup. India’s 10-match winning streak was, however, halted by the Aussies in the summit clash. Batting first, India posted a defendable total of 240. KL Rahul emerged as his side’s highest scorer of the World Cup final with 66. Virat Kohli supported Rahul ably by scoring 54. Skipper Rohit Sharma later rued the fact that Team India could not forge a solid partnership.
“The result has not gone our way. We were not good enough today. We tried everything but it wasn’t supposed to be. 20-30 runs more would have been good, KL and Kohli were stitching a good partnership and we were looking at 270-280 but we kept losing wickets,” Rohit Sharma told the broadcasters.

During the run chase, Australia did face a jolt initially having lost three wickets in quick succession. It was opening batter Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne who stitched a valuable partnership of 192 to earn a win for Australia. The Pat Cummins-led side conceded four wickets and scored the winning runs with 42 balls to spare to be crowned the world champions.
