Chennai Metro Rail’s phase II project is bringing a unique twist similar to China’s train-through-apartment concept to the city.
In Thirumangalam, a 12-storey building will be constructed, with trains passing through it, aiming to enhance transit-oriented development.
The officials from Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) revealed that these trains will traverse at around 15 meters above the ground, likely on the building’s fourth floor. Plans are underway to ensure easy access from all floors to reach the platform for boarding the train.
“We’re planning to erect this tall building across a 400-meter area. The blueprint is ready and will soon seek approval from the Project Management Review Committee. Our focus is on creating transit-oriented development for smoother commuting. Once inside this dedicated floor with running trains, commuters can swiftly grab a ticket and hop on board,” shared an official with The Hindu.
About 90 percent of the land needed for this building’s construction has already been acquired, with the remaining acquisition expected to conclude soon, as stated by another official.
The Thirumangalam station forms part of corridor 5 in phase II, starting from Madhavaram, passing through areas like Anna Nagar, Thirumangalam, Villivakkam, Alandur, and concluding at Sholinganallur. The project plans two more corridors: Madhavaram to SIPCOT and Light House to Poonamallee.
