The Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) has achieved a significant milestone in the construction of the East-West Metro’s last crosspassage beneath Subodh Mullick Square.
This accomplishment comes without any ground settlement or structural damage to the nearby eight-storey building, which was evacuated last Monday.
Officials express confidence that, with continuous grouting activities, the entire cross-passage work will be completed before the end of May. The completion of this phase will propel the Esplanade-Sealdah section closer to its finalization, marking a significant step forward in the Metro’s expansion, as reported by TOI.
The main micro-tunnelling work, supported by temporary structures, has been concluded. Engineers have commenced the process of concretizing the small tunnel rings, anticipating completion within the next three weeks.
Earlier, on April 18, KMRC issued a notification urging occupants of premises at 1A Raja Subodh Mullick Square to vacate temporarily during the underground construction of cross-passage 5B. This precautionary measure was taken due to water seepage observed during ongoing micro-tunnelling work.
The eight-storey building, situated diagonally opposite Hind Inox on Ganesh Chandra Avenue, falls within the influence area of the micro-tunnelling work required for cross-passage 5B.
Engineers highlighted concerns about the building’s foundation being inadequate for its height, necessitating the evacuation. However, officials have announced that occupants will be allowed to return on Wednesday.
Cross-passages serve as vital emergency tunnels at 250-metre intervals along underground Metro lines, providing passengers with a safe passage in case of emergencies such as fires.
KMRC had to revise its plans after the subsidence incident on October 14, 2022, which led to the abandonment of three of the originally proposed eight cross-passages in the Esplanade-Sealdah section.
