Bengaluru Man With Over 250 Traffic Violations Fined Rs 1 Lakh

Traffic violation has always been a common offence. From not wearing helmets while riding a bike to bypassing red signals, people often end up violating traffic rules. And with violation comes a fine— some are nominal while others are hefty. Now, in a recent incident, a man from Bengaluru with as many as 255 traffic violations was served notice by the police to clear Rs 1.34 lakh in fines.

Identified as Elumalai, the offender only cleared Rs 10,000 and settled 20 cases, reported Deccan Herald. Meanwhile, the police have impounded the Suzuki Access scooter of Elumalai, a daily wage labourer.

The man, who accumulated the violations over a span of two years, was eventually under the radar when Bengaluru Police searched for violators with more than 50 offences to their names. The report quoted a senior police officer who said that after the digitalisation of traffic fine payment, such cases are being reported regularly as the department has been gathering data about vehicles with over 50 violations.

According to DH, Elumalai was not aware of the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) cameras installed near his house. He and his son drove past the traffic cameras without wearing a helmet multiple times in the last two to three years.

In a bid to crack down on traffic offenders, Bengaluru Police has now started to notify companies whose employees are caught violating rules. This also include riding two-wheelers on the wrong side of the road.

A Money Control report suggests that the police send a list of violations to each company. This initiative, which is active across Bengaluru’s information technology corridor, is a possible attempt to instil the fear of professional repercussions among violators.

“We are just experimenting with this initiative to see if the riders become more conscious about the road safety and traffic rules,” the portal quoted Mahadevapura traffic police Inspector Ramesh R as saying. “As part of the initiative, when we catch hold of a violator, we check his identification card to identify his company. The traffic department is in touch with the companies and tech parks falling under our division,” he went on to add.

The cop highlighted that whenever an individual is caught bypassing traffic rules, a ‘list of violations by the riders’ is sent to their employer on WhatsApp. “We also issue online challans, not spot fines for violations,” he said.
