The traditional attire consists of a heavily embellished blouse, a bright-coloured saree, and a dupatta to cover the head.

Traditional dresses have their own charm, elegance, aura, and most importantly, significance. One such traditional dress is worn by lambani women. Lambanis are a tribal community. From dresses to ornaments, there might be hardly any who doesn’t like these attires donned by lambani women. Known by various names including lambani and banjara, these attires are popular in various parts of the country including Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Karnataka.

However, there are variations depending on the region. As reported by Local 18, Karnataka women also wear these attires. In one of the videos captured by the Local 18 team, lambani kids can be seen dressed in their traditional attire that consists of a heavily embellished blouse, a bright-coloured saree and a dupatta to cover the head. The adorable look of these kids is worth all the attention.

Lambani women’s traditional dress is called Fethia Kanchali. Women wear a fetiha — which is lehenga, a kanchili — which means bodice, and veil means dupatta and muttaideru on the arm. They complete their attire with hand bhalya, which are bangles made of plastic and ghugri — which means silver braids. It is a custom to wear pavalarahara (silver necklace), chataki and various other ornaments.

The unique artwork of kannadi is practised by these women while preparing for their daughters’ weddings. The embroidery done by them is a mixture of various patterns including mirror work, cross stitch and kangura patchwork. It is done on woven dark blue or red handloom base cloth. Over the years, the tradition has become popular among women across the nation as most of them love flaunting these attires, despite the fact that it is considered heavy to be worn every day. Currently, the women have begun mixing traditional embroidery, lambani embroidery, and various other designs to create a unique design and a new kind of attire altogether.
