The actor highlighted the challenges faced by celebrities including Rashmika Mandanna, Nora Fatehi and Kajol, who fell victim to deepfakes created through AI. These manipulated images went viral on social media, leading to widespread trolling. Amitabh Bachchan called for legal action to address this serious issue, emphasising the potential harm it poses to society.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of a film festival at Symbiosis International University, Amitabh Bachchan discussed the impact of technological advancements, particularly AI and face mapping. He acknowledged significant changes in technology, including filmmaking innovations, but expressed concern over the short lifespan of such inventions, citing a mere 2-3 months. The actor highlighted the alarming issue of face mapping, where individuals can be manipulated in various ways by changing their faces.
Amitabh Bachchan recounted a recent demonstration by a Mumbai studio, showcasing face mapping technology on Hollywood actor Tom Hanks. In the demonstration, a clip of Tom Hanks was shown simultaneously, with another clip presenting him at 20 years old. The actor raised objections to this practice, mentioning that artists in Hollywood have also protested against producers using their faces at their discretion through mapping technology. He forewarned of a future where even institutions like Symbiosis might contact him through AI rather than traditional means.
During the event, both Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan attended the inaugural ceremony of the Symbiosis Film Festival at Symbiosis International University in Pune. Beyond AI concerns, the veteran actor also addressed criticism directed at the film industry for allegedly influencing the country’s morals. He argued that cinema has historically drawn inspiration from society, rather than being the catalyst for moral change.
