Delhi Police on Saturday claimed to have arrested the man responsible for creating the deep fake video of actress Rashmika Mandanna. The accused, identified as 24-year-old Eemani Naveen from Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur, wanted to boost followers on his Instagram handle.
The video went viral on social media last November, prompting demands from various circles for regulations on social media. In the deepfake video, Rashmika’s face was morphed on London-based influencer Zara Patel. An investigation into the case was underway from November 2023.
Reacting to the arrest, Rashmika too to her Instagram to write, “Expressing my heartfelt gratitude to @delhi.police_official. Thank you for apprehending those responsible. Feeling truly grateful for the community that embraces me with love, support and shields me. Girls and boys – if your image is used or morphed anywhere without your consent. It is wrong! And I hope this is a reminder that you are surrounded by people who will support you and action will be taken! Х (sic).”
According to an India Today report, the accused Naveen revealed that he used to manage fan pages for three celebrities. To increase the followers of Rashmika’s fan page, he created and posted the deepfake video on October 13, 2023.
Just after the viral deepfake video that seemed to depict Rashmika Mandanna entering an elevator emerged on social media, there was widespread outcry about the misuse of technology and the absence of adequate legal safeguards that have allowed this harmful use of artificial intelligence (AI) to flourish. Soon after, a video of with morphed face of Alia Bhatt went viral across on social media. In the video, Alia Bhatt’s face was edited over a different lady and the latter could be seen sitting on the bed. The video featured a girl wearing a blue floral, strapy co-ord set featuring Alia’s face, while she made gestures towards the camera.
