Vidhu Vinod Chopra married thrice in his life. The first marriage of the director was the result of his FTII campus love with the editor Renuka Saluja. The couple got married in 1976. The director was only 24 years old then. However, after seven years of marriage, the duo decided to mutually separate from each other due to the alleged disagreement of having a child in life. Renuka Saluja died due to cancer in 2000. The duo worked together for the National Award-winning short Murder at Monkey Hill.
After his divorce from Renuka Saluja, Vidhu Vinod Chopra decided to tie the knot with filmmaker Shabnam Sukhdev for the second time. But within 4 years this couple got separated. Vidhu Vinod Chopra also has a daughter Esha Vinod Chopra from this marriage. After that, the director became a topic of discussion due to his third marriage.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra married journalist and film critic Anupama Chandra. He first met Anupama Chandra during an interview in 1989. The couple’s love started with quarrels. During the first interview, Anupama asked him some questions, which angered Vidhu Vinod Chopra.
As per reports, the director was irked at a statement of Anupama Chopra when she said that he comes under ‘the director of tomorrow’. Ending on a bad note, the actress went to America to complete her studies. During this time, Vidhu Vinod Chopra released his highly-rated movie Parinda which garnered praise from the audience and critics. Anupama Chopra was impressed by the director and asked her actress mother Kamna Chandra to work with him. It gave birth to the movie 1942: A Love Story along with the friendship between the duo. Soon it changed into love.
The director reportedly made the film Kareeb to impress Anupama Chopra. However, it was a big flop. The couple decided to get married in 1990. Anupama Chopra and Vidhu Vinod Chopra are happily married today and have two children– Zuni Chopra and Agni Chopra.
