BMW to invest Rs 110 crore in India
Car major BMW enters into Indian market with its assembly plant at Chennai with an investment of Rs 110 crore.

Chennai German car major BMW Group announced an initial investment of Rs Rs 110 crore for its assembly plant to be set up near Chennai.

BMW?s sales subsidiary would be located in the Delhi as part of its expansion plans in Asia.

The assembly plant at Maraimalai Nagar, Chennai would produce BMW 3 series and 5 series saloons with the first car expected to roll out of the plant in 2007.

The company is planning to expand its dealership network at all metropolitan centres.

BMW will own 100 per cent of the production and sales unit and will start its operations at early 2007.

According to BMW officials the opening up of the Indian market was an important step in the company's expansion plans in Asia.

"The Indian automobile market offers significant growth potential in the long term. With our increased presence there, we will be well positioned to fully tap into this potential," said Chairman of the Board of Mangement of BMW, A G Helmut Panke.

Initially the company would employ around 200 people in its assembly plant and up to 600 additional jobs would be created in the service network.
