Market ends lower, sensex at 9237
The market closed lower. Selling was seen in oil, banking, auto, FMCG and technology stocks. The Sensex closed down 76.60 points or 0.82 per cent at 9237.53.

New Delhi: The market closed lower. Selling was seen in oil, banking, auto, FMCG and technology stocks. However, it recovered from the lower levels amid some gains in metal and consumer durables stocks.

The market closed lower. The Sensex closed down 76.60 points or 0.82 per cent at 9237.53. It touched an intraday high of 9302.78 and an intraday low of 9158.44.

The Nifty closed down 19.90 points or 0.70 per cent at 2809.20. It touched an intraday high of 2840.10 and an intraday low of 2784.35.

The CNX Midcap Index closed down 27.50 points or 0.66 per cent at 4113.55. It touched an intraday high of 4,136.30 and an intraday low of 4,088.95.

The BSE Small Cap Index closed down 1.10 per cent at 6076.03 and the BSE Midcap Index closed down 0.52 per cent at 4559.35.

The market breadth was extremely negative, about 762 shares advanced, 1680 shares declined, and 57 shares remained unchanged.

Oriental Bank, MTNL, Tata Motors, Sail, Reliance, ONGC, HDFC Bank and Reliance Energy were the biggest index losers.

Hindalco, Wipro, Gujarat Ambuja Cements, ABB, and Dr Reddy’s Labs were the biggest index gainers.

The total market turnover on Wednesday was at Rs 42,666.1 crore. The BSE cash turnover was at Rs 5,188.04 crore. The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 9,783 crore. The NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 27,695.06 crore.

The total turnover includes around Rs 4,200 crore from Reliance special session. Adjusted for that, total turnover would be around Rs 38,400 crore.

Reliance Industries total turnover (including special session) was at Rs 8,442.58 crore. The BSE cash turnover was at Rs 2,256.28 crore. The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 4,323.69 crore. The NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 1,862.61 crore.

Analysts are positive on the market and they expect pre-budget rally to start over the next couple of days. They say the Sensex is likely to touch 9800-10,000 leading up to the budget.

The BSE Oil & Gas Index underperformed the other indices. It closed down 2.06 per cent at 4,461.96 amid losses in Reliance, ONGC, HPCL, Kochi Refineries and Chennai Petro.

Banking stocks like Oriental Bank, Bank of India, PNB, Kotak Mahindra Bank, HDFC Bank, SBI, Union Bank and UTI Bank also ended in the red. The BSE Bankex closed down 1.28 per cent at 5,013.10.

The BSE FMCG Index closed down 0.75 per cent at 1,618.84 as selling was seen in Shaw Wallace, Nestle, HLL, ITC and McDowell.

Auto stocks like Apollo Tyres, Asahi India, Exide Industries, Ashok Leyland, Tata Motors, MICO and Amtek Auto also lost ground. The BSE Auto Index closed down 0.72 per cent at 4,209.01.

Losses were also seen in some capital goods, pharma, and technology stocks.

The BSE Capital Goods Index closed down 0.48 per cent at 5,956.41 and the BSE Healthcare Index closed down 0.30 per cent at 3,189.30.

The BSE IT Index closed down 0.41 per cent at 3,550.73. Wipro managed to hold on to gain after strong quarterly numbers.

However, metal stocks like Hindalco, Tata Steel and Jindal Steel ended in the green. The BSE Metal Index closed up 0.42 per cent at 6,451.72.

Some consumer durables stocks also surged up. The BSE Consumer Durables Index closed up 0.33 per cent at 3,156.24.
