New Delhi: The market closed down on huge profit booking amid volatile trade. The Sensex slipped 157 points. The Nifty tumbled 56 points. Banking, FMCG, pharma, auto and oil stocks were the draggers of the day.
The Sensex closed down at 11,589.44, down 157.46 points or 1.34 per cent. It hit a life high of 11,930.66 in the morning trade and touched an intraday low of 11,564.87 in the afternoon trade.

The Nifty ended at 3454.80, down 56.10 points or 1.60 per cent. It touched an all-time high of 3555.50 and intraday low of 3445.90.
The CNX Midcap closed down 68.20 points or 1.36 per cent at 4949.45. It hit a life high of 5081.95 and an intraday low of 4932.15.
The BSE Small Cap closed down 67.48 points at 6,873.80. The BSE Midcap Index closed at 5,534.77, down 80.16 points.
The market breadth was positive, about 1052 shares advanced, 1461 shares declined, and 43 shares remained unchanged.
The total market turnover was at Rs 67750.24 crore. The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 12981 crore. The BSE cash turnover was at Rs 6700.6 crore.
The NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 48,068.64 crore. It recorded a new high turnover on Friday.
Satyam, Tata Motors, HDFC Bank, Ranbaxy Labs, ICICI Bank, HPCL, GAIL and VSNL were the top losers on the indices.
ACC, Infosys, Grasim, Gujarat Ambuja Cements, BHEL, Jet Airways and Zee Telefilms were the top gainers on the indices.
The BSE Bankex underperformed the other indices. It closed at 5,361.94, down 3.13 per cent or 172.98 points amid losses in Bank of India, Canara Bank, Bank of Baroda, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, UTI Bank, Allahabad Bank, SBI and Union Bank.
FMCG stocks like Shaw Wallace, Colgate, McDowell, Tata Tea, HLL, ITC, Dabur India, P&G, and Nestle also ended lower. The BSE FMCG Index closed at 2,270.87, down 2.49 per cent.
Pharma stocks including Orchid Chemical, Matrix Lab, Divis Labs, Wockhardt, Aurobindo Pharma, Nicholas Piramal, Ranbaxy Labs and GSK Pharma also slipped on profit booking. The BSE Healthcare Index closed at 3,998.39, down 100.26 points or 2.45 per cent.
The BSE Auto Index ended at 5,425.84, down 105.39 points or 1.91 per cent as selling was seen in Escorts, Hind Motors, Tata Motors, Cummins, Sundram, Hero Honda, Maruti Udyog, TVS Motor and Bharat Forge.
Oil stocks like HPCL, GAIL, MRPL, Kochi Refineries, IOC, Petronet LNG and ONGC also dropped down. The BSE Oil & Gas Index closed at 5,018.62, down 1.48 per cent.
Technology stocks including Satyam, HCL Info, Mphasis BFL, Wipro, HCL Tech, TCS, Hexaware Tech and Moser Baer also plummeted. The BSE IT Index closed at 4,087.01, down 0.94 per cent.
The BSE Capital Goods Index ended at 8,683.16, down 0.49 per cent due to profit booking in Alstom Projects, KEC Infrastructures, Ingersoll Rand, HEG, Carborundum, Gammon India and ABB.
However, consumer durables stocks like Su-Raj Diamonds, Mirc Electronics and Blue Star surged. The BSE Consumer Durables Index closed at 3,314.70, up 0.93 per cent.
Metal stocks including Hind Zinc, Sterlite Ind, JSW Steel, Nalco and Hindalco also ended in green. The BSE Metal Index closed at 9,176.86, up 0.65 per cent.
