Mumbai: The markets ended firm amid volatile trade. The Sensex and Nifty managed to close above 10800 and 3200 respectively. This is the highest ever closing for indices. A rally was seen in technology stocks.
The Sensex closed up 38.55 points or 0.36 per cent at 10,803.71. It touched an all-time high of 10884.48.
The Nifty closed up 18.75 points or 0.59 per cent at 3202.65. It touched an all-time high of 3221.30.
The CNX Midcap Index closed up 24.80 points or 0.54 per cent at 4648.30. It touched a high of 4676.
The BSE Midcap Index closed up 31.14 points or 0.62 per cent at 5079.09. The BSE Small Cap Index closed down 1.57 points or 0.02 per cent at 6370.23.
The market breadth was negative, about 1108 shares advanced, 1423 shares declined, and 53 shares remained unchanged.
Dabur India, TCS, Zee, HDFC Bank, Wipro and ONGC were the biggest index gainers.
Nalco, Sail, HDFC, ITC, ICICI Bank, Gujarat Ambuja Cements and Grasim were the biggest index losers.
The total market turnover on Monday was at Rs 40,042.66 crore.
The markets have been looking positive and experts believe that there is more upside to the markets now.
The BSE IT Index outperformed the other indices. It closed up 1.47 per cent at 3884.24 amid gains in Mphasis BFL, HCL Info, Hexaware Tech, TCS, Wipro, Satyam and Infosys.
Oil stocks like MRPL, Chennai Petro, ONGC, Kochi Refineries and Gail also surged up. The BSE Oil & Gas Index closed up 0.84 per cent at 4546.72.
Select pharma stocks also gained. The BSE Healthcare Index closed up 0.02 per cent at 3631.87.
Selling however was seen in consumer durables stocks like Su-Raj Diamonds, Titan and Samtel Color. The BSE Consumer Durables Index closed down 0.69 per cent at 3187.40.
Losses were also seen in select banking, metal, FMCG, capital goods and auto stocks.
The BSE Bankex closed down 0.26 pe cent at 5258.21 and the BSE Metal Index closed down 0.21 per cent at 7644.58. The BSE FMCG Index closed down 0.12 per cent at 2034.38 and the BSE Capital Goods Index closed down 0.03 per cent at 8123.34. The BSE Auto Index closed down 0.09 per cent at 5304.54.
