Sensex slips as Sonia Gandhi resigns
The sensex slipped by as much as 0.5 per cent in late trade on Thursday after Sonia Gandhi resigned from the Lok Sabha and the National Advisory Council.

Mumbai: The sensex slipped by as much as 0.5 per cent in late trade on Thursday after Sonia Gandhi resigned from the Lok Sabha and the National Advisory Council following 'Office of Profit' controversy.

The market ended flat amid volatile trade. Buying was seen in metal, consumer durables, oil and FMCG stocks. However, technology and pharma stocks lost ground.

The market ended flat amid volatile trade. The Sensex closed down 0.76 point or 0.01 per cent at 10840.59. It touched an intraday high of 10924.29 and an intraday low of 10792.98.

The Nifty closed up 0.22 per cent at 3247.15. It touched an intraday high of 3265.60 and an intraday low of 3225.20.

The CNX Midcap Index closed up 0.21 per cent at 4639.50. It touched an intraday high of 4670.10 and an intraday low of 4625.90.

The BSE Small Cap Index closed up 34.84 points or 0.56 per cent at 6216.54. The BSE Midcap Index closed up 20.08 points or 0.40 per cent at 5062.40.

Sail, MTNL, VSNL, Tata Steel, SBI, ACC and Bajaj Auto were the biggest index gainers.

Dr Reddy’s Labs, Reliance Energy, HDFC Bank and Bharti Tele were the biggest index losers.

The market breadth was negative, about 1052 shares advanced, 1416 shares declined, and 74 shares remained unchanged. The total market turnover today was at Rs 53,357.41 crore.

The BSE Metal Index outperformed the other indices. It closed up 2.55 per cent at 7905.93 amid gains in Gujarat NRE Coke, Sail, Tata Steel, Jindal Steel, Nalco, Hindalco, Sterlite Industries and Hindustan Zinc.

Buying was also seen in some consumer durables, oil and FMCG stocks. Select capital goods stocks also gained.

The BSE Consumer Durables Index closed up 0.80 per cent at 3202.79 and the BSE Oil & Gas Index closed up 0.53 per cent at 4735.39. The BSE FMCG Index closed up 0.53 per cent at 2056.48. The BSE Capital Goods Index closed up 0.27 per cent at 8032.71.

However, selling was seen in technology and pharma stocks. The BSE IT Index closed down 0.50% at 3869.05 and the BSE Healthcare Index closed down 0.45 per cent at 3661.32.

Select auto and banking stocks also ended in the red. The BSE Auto Index closed down 0.04% at 5243.29 and the BSE Bankex closed down 0.02 per cent at 5217.56.
