WhatsApp Reportedly Gets Nod for UPI Payments
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has reportedly given the nod to the free messaging application, which is owned by Facebook Inc, to tie up with Indian banks to enable account to account transfers of cash.

New Delhi: Popular instant messaging application WhatsApp has reportedly got the go ahead from the government to integrate its application with the United Payments Interface (UPI) to enable users to transfer money.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has reportedly given the nod to the free messaging application, which is owned by Facebook Inc, to tie up with Indian banks to enable account to account transfers of cash.

Media reports quoted A.P. Hota, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NCPI as saying that permission had been granted. There are also reports that companies like Amazon, Uber and Google are also close to integrating UPI in order to enable users to transfer money digitally.

Enabling digital payments has been a stated goal of the government in order to weed out illicit cash transactions. The government constituted a committee headed by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu to look into ways to promote digital transactions and cashless payments.
