This Unique Rajasthan Temple Issues 'Paap Mukti' Certificates For Devotees
The temple, which has been attracting devotees for centuries, is often referred to as the “Haridwar of tribals”.

Amid the numerous temples, sacred rivers, and ponds that draw countless devotees seeking spiritual benefits, a unique temple in Rajasthan distinguishes itself by offering a ‘Paap Mukti’ (sin redemption) certificate to those who take a dip in its sacred tank. The Gautameshwar Mahadev Paapmochan Teertha, situated in the Pratapgarh district of Rajasthan, grants these certificates to pilgrims for a nominal fee of Rs 12.

Frequently referred to as the ‘Haridwar of tribals’, this temple has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries. Since India’s independence, the temple has consistently issued these certificates to visiting devotees. The Aminat Kachhari, a council of temple priests, charges a mere Re 1 for each certificate, with the remaining Rs 11 designated for “dosh-nivaran,” signifying the removal of obstacles.

Nandkishore Sharma, one of the temple’s priests, explains that individuals ostracized in their villages often come to the temple seeking redemption and depart with a “paap-mukti” certificate in hand.

Kanhaiyalal Sharma, another temple priest, elaborates on the sense of guilt that often drives people to seek such certificates. For instance, farmers may inadvertently harm insects and other creatures, or damage the eggs of birds and reptiles in the course of their agricultural activities. The burden of guilt drives them to the temple. However, their visit offers solace and relief.

Of the 250-300 certificates issued annually, the majority are granted to individuals seeking redemption for unintentional actions that involve the inadvertent killing of animals and insects. Some also require certificates to end boycotts imposed by their respective communities. These certificates carry profound significance as they serve as tangible proof that the recipients have been absolved of their sins. Endorsed by local panchayat members, the certificate includes a message stating, “The ‘panchs’ of the villages should know that this person took a bath in ‘Madankini Paap Mochini Ganga Kund’ of Shri Goatmeshwar ji, which was built so that people could atone for their sins. Therefore, this certificate has been provided. Please accept him/her back into the caste society.”

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple attracts thousands of devotees, particularly during the month of Sawan and on Mondays when Lord Shiva is particularly venerated. The temple’s distinctive offering of “Paap Mukti” certificates has made it a place of both spiritual pilgrimage and social redemption, providing solace and redemption to those who seek it. It serves as a testament to the profound spiritual and cultural diversity found across India’s sacred landscapes.
