The pacers had a dream outing as 23 wickets fell out of which 22 were taken by the fast bowlers on Day 1 of the second Test match at Newlands, Cape Town. The batters had a forgettable day. Interestingly, it is the second-most number of wickets that fell on the first day of a Test match and the joint-most on the Proteas’ soil.
The first session was dominated by a brilliant spell of Mohammed Siraj, who claimed a six-wicket haul as South Africa were bundled for just 55 in the first innings. In reply, India managed to take the lead quite comfortably at Tea with Virat Kohli and KL Rahul in the middle. Meanwhile, the tables turned completely in the final session where India suffered one of the most embarrassing collapses in history – they lost their last six wickets for no runs in 11 balls.
From 153/4, India were bundled out for 153 all out which was embarrassing for them in every sense.

Meanwhile, the wickets kept tumbling after the Indian innings also as South Africa lost three wickets at stumps on Day 1.
Stand-in captain Dean Elgar, who is playing his final Test, had an underwhelming end to his career as he was out for four and 12. He ended up with 5347 runs in 86 matches at an average of 37.92.
South Africa ended the way with 62/3 at the stumps with Aiden Markram 36* and David Bedingham 7* in the middle as they still trail India by 36 runs.
Mukesh Kumar claimed two wickets for India in the second session as he got the better of Elgar and Tony de Zorzi. Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Tristian Stubbs for 1.
Earlier, India collapsed to 153 all out in their first innings in the final session after skittling out South Africa for 55.
Virat Kohli top-scored with 46 while captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill made 39 and 36 respectively. India faced just 34.5 overs. They had resumed the post-tea session at 111 for 4.
India lost their last six wickets in 11 balls for no run. India, who had lost the first Test in Centurion, had taken a 98-run first innings lead.
Meanwhile, the first session belonged to Mohammed Siraj.
Siraj exploited the conditions to his fullest and produced one of the best spells by an Indian paceman on the Proteas’ solid with the figures of 6/15.
South Africa were all out inside 24 overs as Ravindra Jadeja didn’t even get the chance to roll his arms over.
Apart from Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah and Mukesh Kumar claimed two wickets each. The Indian fielders were also very attentive as they didn’t drop any catches and complemented the pacers well.
Only two of their batters – David Bedingham (12) and Kyle Verreynne (15) were able to register the double-digit scores for them.
