Captain Suryakumar Yadav is gearing up to lead the World Champions Team India in Sri Lanka T20Is, starting July 27 in Pallekele. The team has arrived in the island nation and on Tuesday, it underwent its first training session at the Pallekele International Stadium under the watchful eyes of newly-appointed coach Gautam Gambhir.
Before getting started in the training session, the official broadcaster for the series, Sony Sports Network, posted a video on social media in which Suryakumar and Mohammed Siraj could be seen walking down the stairs. As they began jogging, the India skipper turned around and cautioned all-rounder Axar Patel not to hurry down the stairs with his kit bag.
Suryakumar could also be heard saying, “Aaram se, aaram se… Teesre chauthe over ke baad tu hi dikhega (You will be bowling after overs 3 or 4).”

The questions surrounding Suryakumar Yadav’s appointment as India captain were answered by chief selector Ajit Agarkar who jointly addressed a press conference with Gautam Gambhir on Monday in Mumbai.

“Why Surya was made captain? Because he is one of the deserving candidates. The one we know has been around the dressing room over the last year, you get feedback from the dressing room a lot. He has got a good cricketing brain and he is still one of the best T20 batters in the world,” Agarkar said during the joint press conference.
“You (would) want a captain that’s going to be more likely to play all the games. We think he’s a deserving candidate and hopefully, we’ll see over time how he develops into the role,” he added.
Suryakumar has previously led the Mumbai team in domestic matches. His only experience of leading India came last year when India won 4-1 against Australia at home, before being held to a 1-1 draw in South Africa.
