Team India opened their third game in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 against hosts USA at the Nassau County Cricket Stadium in New York on Wednesday in fiery fashion as pacer Arshdeep Singh became the first Indian bowler to pick up a wicket on the first delivery of a T20 WC game.
The southpaw added to his tally with the dismissal of Andries Gous to close out the opening over of the enticing affair between the sides.
The left-arm seamer trapped USA opener Shayan Jahangir plumb in front of the wicket with a ripper of a delivery, before adding another to his tally with the dismissal of Gous in the final ball of the over.

Arshdeep joined a glittery list of bowlers to have picked up a scalp in the very first ball of a T20 WC game, following Bangladesh pacer Mashrafe Mortaza’s performance against Afghanistan in 2014, Afghan Shapoor Zadran who attained the feat against Hong Kong in the same year.
Namibian pacer Ruben Trumplemann managed the feat twice, once against Scotland in the 2021 edition and doubled down on his tally against Oman in the ongoing season.
India won the coin toss against the USA and skipper Rohit Sharma opted to have a bowl first. Arshdeep was given the new ball and delivered the first blow with the opening delivery of the game to script history.
USA are without the services of skipper Monank Patel, following a shoulder strain and opened the innings with Jahangir and Steven Taylor. The former took strike and fell to the seamer’s venomous delivery to walk back to the hut early in the game, before Gous followed his teammate back in the dugout shortly after.
Both teams come into the game on two-game winning streaks and will look to seal qualification to the Super 8 phase of the tournament with a victory here on the day.
