"Don't see much harm in it": AB de Villiers on 'Impact Sub' Rule in IPL
Amidst growing dissent against the IPL's 'Impact Sub' rule, RCB's Mr 360° expresses his favourable opinion regarding the same.

The ongoing IPL 2024 season has seen several former cricketers express their contrasting opinions about the ‘Impact Sub’ rule. Among them is the South African legend AB de Villiers, who has voiced his opinion in favour of the rule, which was implemented in the IPL a year back.

As per de Villiers, the batters are “having a feast” in the current edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to the rule, but he does not think it’s concerning.

This season there has been a significant jump in the amounts of runs teams have scored, setting record-breaking totals. The argument is that the ‘Impact Sub’ rule has allowed teams the extra cushion of a batter and hence the mindset of the batting team has changed with the gung-ho approach right from the word go, while the counter to that is the Impact Sub Rule is undermining the value of all-rounders in the playing XIs.

Among them is the Delhi Capitals all-rounder Axar Patel, who criticised the rule during an open mic session in Delhi on Monday. The Indian player, who’s currently eyeing a spot in India’s T20 World Cup squad, went on to say that he is not a huge fan of the Impact Player being used.

On a contradictory note to that, the Proteas great de Villiers has only positive things to say about IPL’s ‘Impact Sub’ rule.

Speaking on his Youtube Channel on Wednesday (April 24), de Villiers said, “It is the batter’s game at the moment. They are having a feast and it does not help that the wickets have been incredibly good at the IPL.”

“I was excited when it was introduced. It is too early for me to call it but I personally do not see too much harm to it,” RCB’s Mr 360° added.

AB de Villiers, who was a crucial part of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team from 2011 to 2021, also discussed spinner Yuzvendra Chahal’s departure from the franchise in 2021, describing it as a “heartbreaking moment.”

“RCB let him (Chahal) go. It was a heartbreaking moment. He was a part of the furniture there and also their best bowler. It was crazy that he got left out of that franchise.”

Mentioning of his former RCB teammate’s latest achievement, de Villiers said, “It is not easy looking at Yuzi go to 200 wickets and him not being a part of RCB.”

Chahal has been representing the Rajasthan Royals since 2022 and recently achieved the milestone of becoming the first bowler ever to claim 200 IPL wickets, in a match against Mumbai Indians on Monday.

In 153 matches, Chahal has taken 200 wickets at an average of 21.37, with the best figures of 5/40. He also has stellar figures like six four-wicket hauls and a five-wicket haul in his decorated IPL career.

Chahal played for Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru before joining Rajasthan Royals in 2022. Although he remained wicketless in the single match he played for MI, he accumulated 139 wickets across 113 matches for RCB. Since joining RR, he has secured 61 wickets in 39 matches.
