Indian Women’s Cricket Team opener Shafali Verma scripted history on Friday in Chennai as she registered the quickest double ton in the women’s game against South Africa in the one-off Test between the sides.
Shafali got to the coveted 200-run mark in just 196 deliveries, overtaking Australia’s Annabel Sutherlands, who got to the double ton in 248 deliveries for the previous fastest two hundred.
Australia’s Karen Rolton, who posted a double century against England in the year 2001, brought up her landmark in 306 deliveries, followed by Englishwoman Tammy Beaumont’s two-hundred, which she got to in 317 deliveries against Australia in 2023 comes in as the fourth quickest int he women’s category.
Aussie Michelle Gosko’s double ton in 343 deliveries against the English in the 2001 season completes the top five of the quickest women cricketers to the illustrious mark.
Shafali opened the innings alongside star batter Smriti Mandhana in the one-off Test held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai as the pair put up a 292 runs stand for the first wicket before Mandhana was dismissed by Delmari Tucker for 149 runs.
Subha Satheesh came out to bat and added 15 runs before succumbing to Nadine de Klerk.
Shafali, who got to her maiden century in 113 deliveries, put her foot down there on as she raced to the two-hundred run mark with some incredible cricketing shots.
Jemimah Rodrigues and skipper Harmanprett Kaur built up a partnership after the fall of Shafali’s wicket as she was caught short of her crease by Nonkululeko Mlaba after having made 205 runs in just 197 deliveries.
