Rohit cracked about Australia’s exit from the tournament when a reporter quizzed him about his biggest takeaway from the game against the Aussies in the Super 8.
India sealed their place in the final four of the T20 showpiece in the Caribbean by topping Group 1 of the Super 8 phase of the competition as they beat Australia, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
In the tournament’s biggest shock, Afghanistan pipped Australia to come in second behind India with their triumphs over the Aussies and the Banglad Tigers in dramatic fashion to enter their maiden World Cup semifinals.
India got the better of the Australian unit by a huge margin of 24 runs as Rohit’s swashbuckling 91 runs carnage off just 41 deliveries set Indian up on course for a big total of 205, and was supported by Suryakumar Yadav’s 31 runs knock and Shivam Dube’s 22 runs innings.
Australia suffered a blow when they lost opener David Warner to Arshdeep Singh in the first over of the chase but a 81 run stand between Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh steadied the Aussies a bit before the Australian skipper Marsh was dismissed by spinner Kuldeep Yadav for 37.
Glenn Maxwell departed for 20 to Kuldeep before Axar Patel scalped Marcus Stoinis for just 2 runs. Travis Head, who added 76 runs, was removed by strike bowler Jasprit Bumrah.
Matthew Wade fell cheaply for just a single run to Arshdeep, before Tim David, who added 15 runs, also succumbed to the southpaw seamer.
Pat Cummins remained unbeaten on 11 runs alongside Mitchell Starc at 4 for the company across the pitch, but Australia ended up 25 runs short of the mark thereby blowing up their qualification chances, which were absolutely decimated as Afghanistan went on to pick up a thrilling win over Bangladesh in the final match of the Super 8 round of fixtures to determine the semifinalists.
South Africa are slated to face off against Afghanistan in the first semifinal on Thursday followed by India squaring up against holders England in the second matchup of the final-four.
