It has been more than four decades since legendary India captain, Kapil Dev, made his debut in Test cricket. With Bishan Bedi in charge, India toured Pakistan in 1978 to play two ODIs and three Tests. Kapil, who was part of the travelling unit, appeared in the first Test, which started at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad on October 16.
He had also featured in the ODI series and took two wickets. At that point in time, Kapil had already established his stature as one of the most promising fast-bowling talents in India. He earned the India call-up after demonstrating his incredible prowess in domestic cricket as part of the Haryana team.

Before jetting off to Pakistan, Kapil Dev had exhibited his class in the Ranji Trophy. He, however, failed to replicate his form in his debut Test. Kapil bowled 16 overs in the first innings and failed to pick any wickets.
Pakistan posted a mammoth 503 on the board, thanks to centuries by Zaheer Abbas and Javed Miandad.
The hosts lost nine wickets when they chose to declare on the second day of the Test. The Indian batters also enjoyed a good outing in Faisalabad. Gundappa Viswanath struck 145, while Sunil Gavaskar and Dilip Vengsarkar scored 89 and 83 runs respectively.
Kapil Dev, who batted at number 8, managed 8 runs before getting dismissed by Mushtaq Mohammad. India ultimately declared their first innings after producing 462 at the loss of nine wickets.
Kapil Dev looked more composed in the second innings and impressed with his express pace. He secured his first international wicket by dismissing Sadiq Mohammad. The Pakistan opener scored 16 runs before falling victim to 19-year-old Kapil.
Zaheer Abbas once again showcased his A-game with the bat but missed out on a century by just four runs. Asif Iqbal was the top performer for the hosts scoring 104 runs. Pakistan declared after setting a target of 306 runs. Kapil Dev wrapped up the second innings with figures of 1/25.
India lost no wicket in the fourth innings and the match ended in a draw. Pakistan triumphed in the next two Tests and won the home series 2-0.
