'One Walk-in Player With Leadership Skills': Sanjay Manjrekar's Pick for Future India Captain in All Formats - WATCH

As India marches onto the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2024. The pressure will be on Rohit Sharma to lead India to the title as questions arise regarding who could lead the nation soon, and whether we will see one captain across all formats. Sanjay Manjrekar has had his say on these topics in a video that was uploaded on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Speaking in a video uploaded by the Press Trust of India, Manjrekar highlighted the fact that even when India had Rohit leading the side in all formats, there have been different captains to take up the role in Rohit’s absence.

The likes of Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Jasprit Bumrah have been handed the role of leading the side on several occasions when Rohit was not present in the squad.

“Even if Rohit Sharma has captained India across three formats in the main marquee events, India has had different captains in T20Is and ODIs and Test matches when Rohit wasn’t available in SA (2021-22) for example. That happens,” he said.

“But to answer your question, if there is a walk-in when it comes to all three formats plus has leadership skills, I think Jasprit Bumrah is that example but I don’t see one player playing every international game in a calendar year, so we will keep having different captains and as I said if you are looking at all for somebody now, I am not at all advocating that Bumrah should be the captain for all three formats but if you ask me would there be one player, I think you have one player there,” he added.

Bumrah has only captained the national team during their tour of Ireland when the pacer made his return from an injury. While he might not have been used as a captain he has continued to be an indispensable asset for the Indian team across all formats. India is set to begin their Super 8 campaign against Afghanistan which is set to take place at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on June 20, 2024.
