ON THIS DAY IN 2017: India skipper Rohit Sharma became the joint-fastest T20I centurion on this day back in 2017. Rohit achieved a 35-ball century against Sri Lanka to equal the record for the fastest hundred scored by South Africa’s David Miller. Later, the record was broken by 19-year-old Nepalese cricketer Kushal Malla. The teenager set the record against Mongolia at the Asian Games in September 2023.
Rohit’s fabulous knock guided India to a mammoth total of 260 at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore. This still remains India’s highest total in T20I cricket. India, led by Rohit in that game, succeeded in getting the better of Sri Lanka by 88 runs.
As Rohit Sharma celebrates the sixth anniversary of his stupendous knock, we take a look back at the innings against Sri Lanka.
Winning the toss, Sri Lanka skipper Thisara Perera decided to bowl first but the move soon backfired. Team India got off to a flying start and opening batters—Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul—stitched a solid partnership of 165 runs.
Rohit Sharma breached the 50-run mark facing just 22 balls. He eventually required 35 deliveries to bring up his T20I hundred. With this, he became the fastest Indian centurion across all three formats of the game. Rohit recorded the memorable century off the first ball of the 12th over and he reached this milestone with a brilliant cover-drive.
India’s opening partnership came to an end in the 13th over after Rohit Sharma was dismissed by Dushmantha Chameera. The India skipper returned to the dressing room having scored 118 off 43 balls. His blistering knock comprised 12 boundaries and 10 sixes.
KL Rahul was the next to depart having scored 89 runs off 49 balls. Rahul and Rohit Sharma’s magnificent batting powered India to a huge total of 260.
The target proved to be quite challenging for Sri Lanka who lost their first wicket, during the run chase, in the fifth over. Sri Lanka’s Kusal Perera came up with a valiant knock of 77 but his batting ultimately went in vain as the visitors were bowled out for 172.
India’s Yuzvendra Chahal was the best performer with the ball for his side in the game as he picked up four wickets. Kuldeep Yadav also looked in fine form having claimed three wickets in the game. The emphatic 88-run victory helped India in extending their lead to 2-0 in the three match T20I series against Sri Lanka.
