Rohit Sharma was all cheered up while collecting the T20 World Cup 2024 trophy on Saturday after India defeated South Africa by 7 runs in the final, ending the team’s 11-year wait for a global title. It was an emotional moment for every player in the team. Captain was on his haunches as he was emotionally exhausted. He eventually announced his retirement in the press conference after Virat Kohli did in the post-match presentation ceremony.
Hardik Pandya, booed through the IPL after being handed Mumbai Indians captaincy, broke down after having endured a tough six months. The sense of relief and jubilation was evident in the stars of the Indian team, Kohli and Rohit, who might not stay on for another T20 World Cup cycle. The result was also a fitting farewell to head coach Rahul Dravid.
Rohit ensured enjoying every moment before leaving the field. And the way he collected the trophy from BCCI secretary Jay Shah will be remembered for edges. The Indian captain performed a slow-motion walk before laying his hands on the coveted silverware and bursting into celebration.

In the high-pressure run chase, India pacers provided two early wickets before a 58-run stand between opener Quinton de Kock (39 off 31) and Tristian Stubbs (52 off 27) put the Proteas back in the game. However, it was Klaasen’s breathtaking knock that almost stunned India.
Needing a wicket, Rohit Sharma did not turn to his lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah and went for Axar Patel in the 15th over in which Klaasen pounded a couple of sixes and as many fours to single-handedly take the game away from the opposition.
The asking rate suddenly dropped to run a ball and it became South Africa’s game to lose.
Earlier, India did well to post the highest total in a T20 World Cup final after being 34 for three. Axar was run out in an unfortunate manner, completely against the run of play, which brought about an end to his 72-run partnership off 54 balls with Kohli. Kohli did slow down considerably in the middle overs to bring up his first 50 off the tournament with 48 balls.
