Team India’s ODI and Test captain, Rohit Sharma reflected on his side finally claiming the T20 World Cup 2024 title after many heartbreaks during his tenure as skipper.
Rohit, who was present for the inauguration of a cricket academy in Karjat, Maharashtra addressed the public. He spoke on what it meant to give the nation a world title after 11 years.
“Winning the World Cup was our biggest goal. Winning the World Cup was much-needed relief,” said the Indian captain.
After leading India to their second World T20 title, Rohit along with Virat Kohli announced their retirement from T20 international, marking the end of an era. While Rohit had a more eventful tournament, scoring 257 runs and being the second-highest run-scorer of the tournament, Kohli did not have much to say with the bat for almost the entire tournament. But the experienced campaigner showed his class in the big finale, where he scored a crucial 76 in 59 deliveries to give the side a defendable score.
The rest, as they say, is history with Team India going on to get the win in Barbados by beating South Africa by seven runs in a nail-biting finish which went down to the wire.
Suryakumar Yadav delivered the catch of the tournament to dismiss an in-form David Miller in the first delivery of the final over to help India get over the final hurdle to claim their second T20 World Cup.

Now Rohit will have his focus set on the upcoming Tests which will prove to be crucial in their run to make it to their third consecutive World Test Championship (WTC) final.
The Indian side will take on New Zealand in a three-match Test series at home on October 16. This would be followed by the side touring Australia for a five-match affair to defend the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024, starting on November 22.
Rohit continues to impress in terms of his leadership of the national side. This was evident during the Kanpur Test against Bangladesh where the Indian side, despite not being able to play for two whole days due to a wet outfield, going on to force a result, which ended up in favour of the Indian unit to help maintain their stronghold at the top of the WTC standings.
