With 12 wickets from three matches, Fazalhaq Farooqi has taken the top spot in the list of leading wicket-takers of the 2024 T20 World Cup playing a prominent role in Afghanistan’s hat-trick of wins. On Thursday, he took three wickets in seven-wicket thrashing of PNG as Afghanistan advanced to the Super Eight round while shutting the doors on New Zealand.
Farooqi was adjudged player-of-the-match for his bowling figures of 3/16 from four overs and while he was being interviewed by Ian Bishop, Afghanistan captain attempted to distract the left-arm pacer by making him laugh.

‘You shut up!’ shot back Farooqi at his captain in a gentle reminder prompting Bishop to hilariously clarify that the reprimand was for Rashid and not him.

“I want to congratulate people of Afghanistan for qualifying to the Super 8, I think we’ve played some good cricket, Farooqi said during the chat. “I was in the IPL, unfortunately I didn’t get a game, so I came here and gave myself the strength to come and perform.”
When asked about his plans, the 23-year-old said, “I have two plans while bowling – just get wickets if there’s any swing or seam, if there’s nothing, no support (from the conditions), then… You shut up! (Farooqi said while pointing towards Rashid) bowl in the right areas.”
Afghanistan defeated Uganda by 125 runs to start their world cup campaign in imperious fashion. They next took down New Zealand by 84 runs before beating PNG to enter Super Eight.
In their fourth and final match of Group C, Afghanistan will be up against West co-hosts West Indies, a team which has also qualified for the next round.
Rashid credited franchise cricket for putting Afghanistan players in a good stead for the global tournament.
“That is the beauty of playing of franchise cricket as you know the conditions, some of them have played at St Lucia (Caribbean Premier League) and know how the pitch will play which will help others. Everyone has the skill to adjust to any condition and hopefully, we will win that game (against WI) as well,” he said.
