EPL: Tottenham go down to Bolton
Kevin Davies scores a brace as Bolton humble Tottenham 4-2.

Bolton: Tottenham was humbled by Bolton following the euphoria of beating European champion Inter Milan in midweek, slumping to a 4-2 loss in the Premier League on Saturday.

Kevin Davies' double and strikes from Gretar Rafn Steinsson and Martin Petrov condemned Spurs to their second successive domestic defeat.

The visitors had threatened to make a late comeback after going down 3-0, with Alan Hutton pulling one back in the 79th minute and Roman Pavlyuchenko adding another.

But substitute Petrov added a fourth for Bolton in injury time to seal the win against that team that conquered Inter 3-1 on Tuesday.

"They worked hard and pressed us and didn't let us play," Spurs manager Harry Redknapp said. "We were too open playing with wide men and we didn't defend well enough. The game was too open ... we left ourselves open at the back."

Spurs were missing Rafael van der Vaart and Aaron Lennon, who both sustained hamstring injuries during the week.

A defensive lapse led to Bolton going in front in the 31st minute.

Sandro lost possession to Fabrice Muamba, who played the ball on to Matt Taylor. He then slipped it through to Davies, whose shot was too strong for Heurelho Gomes and found the bottom corner.

Redknapp decided to boost his attacking options at halftime, bringing on Pavlyuchenko for midfielder Wilson Palacios.

Tottenham almost drew level in the 52nd following a free kick from Bale which shaved the outside of Jussi Jaaskelainen's post.

Bolton hit back immediately and Johan Elmander saw his effort booted clear by Gomes with Paul Robinson and Taylor also playing their part in a flowing move.

Bolton extended its lead in the 56th thanks to Steinsson's first goal of the season. The Icelandic fullback, charged with the task of shadowing Bale, broke clear to get on the end of a cutback from Elmander to fire a shot beyond Gomes.

The third goal came from the penalty spot, with Davies converting after Benoit Assou-Ekotto was punished for tripping Lee Chung-yong.

Tottenham's fightback began when Hutton charged in from the right flank and curled home and Pavlyuchenko volleyed in from a tight angle in the 87th after Bolton failed to clear Bale's free kick.
