Kolkata: Mohun Bagan failed to collect their first three points of the season yet again as they went down to a formidable Churchill Brothers side 2-0 at the Fatorda Stadium on Sunday.
Goals in each half from star striker Odafa Okolie were enough for his team to register their first win in the country’s top division league.
Stanley Rosario opted for a 4-3-3 formation with Manish Maithani, Gauranga Dutta and Snehashish Chakraborty forming the middle three while Vincent Subramanium continued to rely on Odafa Okolie and Bineesh Balan upfront.
The home side almost got in to the groove as Odafa Okolie put his side ahead as early as in third minute. A few minutes later, he once again found the back of the net but for the linesman to raise his flag for offside.
Bagan custodian Shilton Paul kept them in the game when he pulled off a save from Odafa in a one-on-one situation.
At the other end, Chidi Edeh had a couple of chances which didn’t bear any fruit and at half- time the scoreline remained in favour of the Goans.
After the break, Muritala Ali failed to dispatch the floater sent in by Jose Barreto which could have restored parity while Israel Gurung shot off-target after being set-up by Odafa.
Churchill Brothers almost sealed three points in their kitty when Odafa was fouled inside the area and the resultant spot-kick was dispatched flawlessly to make it 2-0 in the 69th minute.
Odafa thought that he had completed his hat-trick but his goal was once disallowed for being in an offside position.
The margin of defeat would have been reduced for the Green and Maroons had Chidi Edeh’s shot not come off the crossbar.
Odafa Okolie was adjudged man of the match for his brace as Churchill hopped their way onto the fifth spot while Bagan have only a single point to show after thee matches.
