Margao: Salgaocar found the back of the net once each on either side of the break as they defeated Sporting Clube de Goa 2-0 in a fourth round encounter of I-League on Sunday.
Salgaocar scored their opening goal through Bikas Jairu at the stroke of the break in the second minute of first half stoppage time. The second one was an own goal by opposition defender Joyner Lourenco(79th).
Sporting Clube de Goa had more of the exchanges and scoring chances but India's No. 1 goalkeeper Subrata Paul pulled off some daring saves to help his team gain full points.
The win takes Salgaocar to five points from four matches while Sporting remain on one point from three matches.
It was a freak goal that gave Salgaocar the lead when Jairu deflected the ball into the net from a shot taken by Francis Kasonde off the corner taken by Gilbert Olivera.
The second half saw Sporting putting pressure on their opponent's defensive third with Kalu Ogba leading the charge making inroads but Paul held the slate clean bringing in daring saves to deny Boima Karpeh, Kalu Ogba and Sumeet Passi from scoring on three occasions.
After Salgaocar survived three close shaves, Sporting conceded an own goal in the 79th minute when defender Joyner Lourenco's harmless looking back pass to keeper Ravi Kumar saw the keeper failing to trap the ball which rolled into the net to give Salgaocar their first win in the league.
