Star striker Sunil Chhetri leads the list of players who are set to go under the hammer at the first ever 'Player Auction' in Indian football. Ten of India's finest footballing talents will feature in the first Indian Super League (ISL) players auction that is scheduled on Friday in Mumbai.
All ten players in the list had missed out on the inaugural season of the ISL last year owing to their individual contracts with respective I-League clubs. However, the players showed keen interest to be a part of the unrivaled football league for the second season, starting from October 3 to December 6.
The 30-year-old four-time AIFF Player of the Year and highest goal scorer for the country, Chhetri, commands the highest base price set for the day at Rs 80 lakh.
Other than Chhetri, who is expected to trigger an intense bidding war among the eight franchises, the other notable Indian players are Karanjeet Singh (base price Rs 60 lakh), Anas Edathodika, Arata Izumi, Robin Singh (all with a base price of Rs 40 lakh), Thoi Singh (Rs 39 lakh), Eugeneson Lyngdoh (Rs 27.50 lakh), Jackichand Singh, Seityasen Singh (both Rs 20 lakh) and Rino Anto (Rs 17.50 lakh).
Six of these ten players - Chhetri, Robin, Thoi, Izumi, Edathodika and Karanjeet - have signed with Football Sports Development Limited, the promoters of the ISL, as free agents.
Jackichand and Seityasen have been loaned from I-League club Royal Wahingdoh FC while Rino Anto and Eugeneson Lyngdoh are loaned from Bengaluru FC.
Additionally, an extensive list of 113 Indian players (other than the above 10) has been made available to eight franchise club owners through the Player Draft (separate from the auction) that is also to be held on the same day.
The eight franchises have 64 Indian players on their roster - either retained from last year or signed from the open market. The comprehensive Draft list would help them to fill up a total of 40 positions of the Indian player quota.
The success of the inaugural season of the ISL has brought back world's interest into Indian football. ISL's crisp 11-week format featuring eight city-based franchises, international footballing stars, renowned coaches, Indian talents, competitiveness and celebrity owners has helped reignite Indian football not just within the country but also internationally.
