Marseille agree to loan out Ben Arfa to Newcastle

London: Newcastle United won the race to sign Hatem Ben Arfa on Saturday, agreeing to a deal with French club Marseille for a one-season loan with an option to make the transfer permanent.

"We think he will add flair to the squad and we're confident he will fit in well with the team we have put together here," Newcastle manager Chris Hughton told the club's website.

The attacking midfielder had been linked with several clubs around Europe, including Liverpool.

Ben Arfa, who cost Marseille 11 million euros ($ 13.99 million) when he signed from Lyon in 2008, has been capped eight times by France and scored in their recent friendly against Norway.
