La Liga champions Real Madrid are set to organise a farewell event for their former captain Nacho Fernandez. The reigning Champions League winners revealed details of the event on their website and social media accounts. Nacho is set to leave the club in this summer transfer window after spending his entire senior career at the Spanish capital.
“Real Madrid CF announces that next Wednesday, July 24, at 1:00 p.m., an institutional event to pay tribute to and farewell our captain Nacho Fernandez will take place at Real Madrid City, with the presence of our president Florentino Perez,” read the club’s official statement.
Nacho Fernandez joined Real Madrid in 2001 at the age of just 10. He played in all categories of the club’s academy Castilla before making his senior-team debut in 2012. In the last 12 years, Nacho proved himself to be a crucial component in one of the most successful periods in the club’s history. He has donned the Real Madrid shirt in 364 matches across all competitions.
The Spanish full-back has scored 16 goals while providing 10 assists. He has won many trophies with the La Liga outfit including four La Liga titles, six Champions League titles, five FIFA Club World Cups, four UEFA Super Cups, two Copa del Rey titles and five Spanish Super Cups.
Despite being approached with multiple contract extension offers, Nacho has chosen to part ways with Real Madrid. Club President Florentino Perez and the senior team coach Carlo Ancelotti wanted to keep the 34-year-old for one more season but failed to convince him. They held talks with Nacho towards the end of last month when his contract was close to expiry.
As per MARCA, Carlo Ancelotti told Nacho, “Don’t do anything crazy, stay here, with us, at Real Madrid.” Ancelotti further warned the player that life outside Real Madrid wasn’t going to be easy. “You don’t know how cold it is out there,” he said.
Nacho is reportedly set to leave for the Middle East to join Al-Qadsiah in the Saudi Pro League for the 2024/25 season. Nacho wrapped up the last campaign as a La Liga and Champions League winner with Real Madrid. He even added an EURO medal to his cabinet after winning the tournament with Spain on German soil. La Roja beat England 2-1 in a thrilling final in Berlin.
