The Super League Kerala, organised by Kerala Football Association, got its inaugural season underway from September 7 with Malappuram FC beating Fora Kochi 2-0 in the opening fixture. A total of six teams are part of the competition including Malappuram FC, Forca Kochi, Kannur Warriors, Calicut FC, Thiruvananthapuram Kombans and Thrissur Magic.

The league will run from September 7 to November 10 with the matches to be held across four venues in Kerala.

Samson is the latest India cricketer to buy a stake in a football club after Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni. While Kohli co-owns Indian Super League club FC Goa, Dhoni is the co-owner of Chennaiyin FC.

Along with Samson, Bismi Group MD V.A. Ajmal Bismi, Dr. Anvar Ameen Chelat and Baby Neelambra are the co-owners of Malappuram FC which plays its home matches at the Mancheri Payyanad Stadium.

Samson is currently involved in the Duleep Trophy, a red-ball competition comprising four teams. After being initially ignored, he was called-up in the India D squad as an injury replacement for Ishan Kishan but didn’t break into the playing XI with KS Bharat getting the nod.

Samson was last seen in action during India’s Sri Lanka tour where he played in the three-match T20I series but he failed to make use of the chances, recording two ducks in a row. Prior to that, he was part of a second-string Indian side that toured Zimbabwe for a five-match T20I series.

While the 29-year-old isn’t in the scheme of things in Test cricket, he will be hopeful of being selected for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Bangladesh to be held next month.
