Nine high-ranking soccer officials, including two current vice-presidents of world football's governing body FIFA and five sports marketing executives, were arrested and detained by Swiss police on May 27 pending extradition at the request of US authorities after a raid at a luxury hotel in Zurich.
The officials were in Switzerland for the FIFA congress and presidential election, where Sepp Blatter is widely expected to win a fifth term at the helm of the governing body of world football.
The arrested officials have been indicted on federal corruption charges, the US law enforcement officials said.
The 47-count indictment unsealed in a federal court in York charged the defendants with racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering conspiracies as part of a scheme that spanned more than two decades, the US Department of Justice said in a statement.
