The Special Committee constituted by Hockey India (HI) has recommended High Performance Director Roelant Oltmans to replace his countryman Paul van Ass as coach of the men's national team after the fallout that led to the latter's ouster just six months into his job.
Former Olympian BP Govinda, who is part of the committee that met in New Delhi on Saturday, confirmed this to CNN-IBN, while adding that HI and Sports Authority of India (SAI) will take the final call on their recommendation.
"Oltmans has been with the team for some time and he is the most logical choice to take over as coach. We have recommended his name to Hockey India that will take the final call," Govinda said.
HI president Narinder Batra confirmed this, adding that Oltmans will be arriving in Delhi from the ongoing fitness camp in Shilaroo on Saturday to have a word, after which Batra will meet SAI Director General next week.
"No final decision has been taken yet," Batra told IBNLive when contacted to confirm the development. "His [Oltmans] name is there [to replace van Ass as coach] and he is coming tomorrow [Saturday] to meet me after which I will have a meeting with SAI DG."
The development came after Harbinder Singh, who chaired the Special Committee meeting, confirmed reporters that Van Ass won't be coming back.
"We are not considering Van Ass since he is not responding, so there is no question of him returning," Harbinder told reporters after marathon meeting at the HI office, which also involved Govinda, V Baskaran, AB Subbaiah, Thoiba Singh, RP Singh, Asunta Lakra and Jasjeet Kaur.
