Neve Campbell Returns To Scream 7 After Exiting Franchise Over Pay Dispute

Scream franchise icon Neve Campbell, known for her portrayal of Sidney Prescott, took a break from the Scream series due to a salary disagreement during the production of Scream 6. However, she has now confirmed her comeback for the upcoming seventh instalment. In an Instagram post shared on Tuesday, Campbell expressed her excitement, stating, “Sidney Prescott is coming back!!!! It’s always been such a blast and an honour to get to play Sidney in the ‘Scream’ movies. My appreciation for these films and for what they have meant to me has never waned.”

“I’m very happy and proud to say I’ve been asked, in the most respectful way, to bring Sidney back to the screen and I couldn’t be more thrilled,” she adds.

Kevin Williamson, the creator and writer behind the Scream franchise, is stepping into the director’s chair for Scream 7. Williamson, who previously penned the scripts for the first, second, and fourth instalments, expressed his gratitude and anticipation for the project on Instagram. He wrote, “I can’t wait to take this journey with Neve and the entire Scream family as we bring back Sidney Prescott in the next chapter of the Scream franchise. Thank you to all the ‘Scream’ fans. You are the gift that keeps giving.”

Guy Busick, co-writer of the fifth and sixth films, will be taking over the screenwriting duties for Scream 7, with James Vanderbilt continuing in his role as producer alongside William Sherak, Paul Neinstein, and the directing collective Radio Silence, who served as executive producers for the previous two movies.

Campbell’s decision to return follows the departure of Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega from the franchise. Barrera was dismissed from Scream 7 last year due to controversial social media posts, while Ortega’s scheduling conflicts with Netflix’s Wednesday series led to her exit, as reported by Variety.

The Scream franchise, so far, comprises six movies, a TV series, merchandise, and games. Initially, the first four films, centred around Sidney Prescott’s battles with various murderers assuming the identity of Ghostface, the storyline delves into themes of revenge and jealousy. Subsequent films pivot to Samantha Carpenter and her sister, Tara, as they become targets due to their ties to the original killers. Released on December 20, 1996, the first instalment, Scream, achieved record-breaking success as the highest-grossing slasher film globally at the time.
