History of Labubus
Labubus began as a character in a book by artist Kasing Lung. Labubu is one of the main characters of the fantasy series The Monsters, along with her friends Tycoco, Mokoko, and Zimomo. Lung partnered with Chinese retailer POP MART in 2019 to release Labubu toys. Within a few years, Labubus were everywhere. Labubus’ popularity skyrocketed after they were spotted on celebrities like Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Lisa and Rosé from Blackpink, Lance Bass, Cardi B, and Cher. The craze is also partially driven by POP MART’s decision to sell the toys in blind boxes. Consumers purchase a doll from a certain series, but don’t know exactly which style they’re getting until after they buy it. That sometimes encourages people to keep purchasing until they get the exact Labubu they want.
