Andhra Farmers' Unique Solution To Protect Crops From Stray Animals
Stray animals and birds may come and attack the crops before they harvest, leading to huge monetary losses to farmers.

Farmers in Prakasam district, Andhra Pradesh, have devised an innovative strategy to protect their crops from animal infestation, a persistent challenge despite recent heavy rains and proper farming practices. While scarecrows have become less effective, farmers in the region have taken a hands-on approach to guard their crops.

The farmers construct makeshift beds in the fields using four bamboo sticks and a sturdy piece of cloth tied between them. Additionally, they add a shade to shield themselves from the sun and rain. These beds serve as vantage points for the farmers to keep a watchful eye on their crops, especially during the night when the threat of stray animals is more prominent.

To protect crops from cattle and other wandering animals, farmers ascend the beds at night and employ vocal tactics to scare away potential threats. Spending the entire night in the fields, the farmers remain vigilant, ensuring the safety of their crops.

Mohammad Hussain, a farmer from the region, highlighted that his family has been employing this technique for generations, and it has proven to be a successful method for crop protection.

In a recently viral video, a farmer demonstrated how to build a gadget from commonplace items to deter animals and birds, providing an additional layer of defence for crops. The device featured an iron chain attached to a fan’s motor, producing continuous noise when the chain struck an empty steel box. This persistent noise proved effective in irritating birds and other animals, discouraging them from approaching the crops.

The hands-on approach of farmers in the Prakasam district reflects their commitment to safeguarding crops amidst challenges posed by animal intrusion. As they adapt to changing conditions and explore inventive solutions, these farmers exemplify resilience and resourcefulness in agricultural practices.
