A Swiggy user from Hyderabad ordered 1,633 biryanis this year, according to the platform’s annual food trends report. This amounts to more than four biryanis per day! The report adds that every 6th biryani was ordered from Hyderabad. These numbers cement the claims that Hyderabadis don’t mind eating biryani for three meals in a day. In 2019, Hyderabad was chosen by UNESCO as a creative city in gastronomy due to its rich culinary heritage.
However, it’s not only biryani that had Hyderabad’s heart (and stomach). The humble Idli reigned supreme when a customer from Hyderabad spent Rs 6 lakh on them.
The maximum number of orders were by user accounts in Chennai, Delhi, and Hyderabad with more than 10,000 each.
Swiggy’s report throws up some other interesting numbers too.
Biryani has been searched 40,30,827 times on the food delivery platform. It was the most-ordered dish for the eighth straight year.
India ordered 2.5 biryanis per second in 2023. For every 5.5 chicken biryanis, there was one veg biryani ordered.
2.49 million users made their debut on Swiggy with a biryani order. 4.3 lakh biryanis were ordered on the platform on January 1, 2023. Another big revelation was a user from Mumbai, who placed food orders worth Rs 42.3 lakh.
A family in Chandigarh ordered 70 plates at one go during the tense India vs Pakistan World Cup match in October. Swiggy was clocking over 250 Biryani orders per minute during this match.
During Durga Puja, Gulab Jamuns outshone Rasgullas with over 7.7 million orders. Masala Dosa was the top favourite in veg orders for all nine days of Navratri.
2023 is the International Year of Millets and Swiggy saw a 124% growth in orders for millet-based dishes in the ‘Guilt Free’ category and a 38% increase in search queries for them. Foxtail, buckwheat, jowar, bajra, ragi, rajgira, and amaranth were the most searched keywords in the healthy food category.
