ON THIS DAY IN 2009: Sachin Tendulkar is a name synonymous with trophies, records and accolades. The Master Blaster has scored a whopping 100 centuries in his international career, producing some of the most memorable knocks in the history of the game. Some of his knocks were career-defining in which he terrified opponents with his prolific batting.

He produced a magnificent performance against Australia during a bilateral series in November 2009. At the time, Sachin was not having a great run of form, with eight centuries in six years. Doubts were looming large over Sachin making the team for the World Cup scheduled to be held in 2011 in India.

Despite all the drama, the batting maestro silenced his haters with a monstrous knock of 175 runs against the mighty Aussies having faced just 141 deliveries on this day in 2009.

The Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad witnessed a masterclass on November 5. Australia had won the toss and elected to bat first. Aussie openers Shane Watson and Shaun Marsh remained unbeaten for 145 runs, giving their side the perfect start. Marsh went on to smash 112 runs in 112 balls while Watson departed for 93. Cameron White added another 57 runs in 33 balls, helping Australia to reach 350.

With a mammoth target ahead of them, India looked upon their best players to rescue the match. Virender Sehwag kicked off things in classic style, scoring a quick 38 runs in 30 balls before being dismissed by Ben Hilfenhaus in the ninth over. Sehwag’s departure added a lot of responsibility on Sachin’s shoulders who stitched partnerships with Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh and Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

After support from Suresh Raina, Sachin Tendulkar was able to score his ton as the duo quickly stitched a valubale 137-run partnership. Raina added 59 runs to India’s tally while the Master Blaster smashed 19 boundaries and four maximums in the game taking his tally to 175 runs.

Sachin was then dismissed by a slower ball from Clint McKay leaving India needing 20 runs to get past the finish line. Both Ravindra Jadeja and Praveen Kumar fell prey to run-outs. Ashish Nehra was the next wicket to fall, being dismissed for a single run in two balls from Doug Bollinger. India ended up losing the match by three runs despite a heroic attempt from Sachin Tendulkar.
