BHUBANESWAR: The State Government on Monday decided to engage 17,543 ‘sikshya sahayaks’ in the coming days in schools. This is said to be one of the biggest initiatives of the Government to provide employment to youths after Naveen Patnaik returned to power for the third time.The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Naveen on Monday. Opposition parties promptly described the move as yet another populist stunt ahead of panchayat polls in February next year. According to the decision, the district collectors will soon bring out advertisements for appointment of the ‘sikshya sahayaks’ at the district level. The para-teachers will be appointed in the education circles as per the necessity and vacancy of teachers.The ‘sikshya sahayaks’ would be engaged mainly in primary schools during the academic year 2012. Official sources said candidates having CT and B.Ed qualification will be given preference. Candidates with Urdu CT qualifications will also be recruited as Urdu language teachers.The new para-teachers will be engaged against the vacant posts. They will be selected by a committee headed by the Collector and engaged in each education district by the respective zilla parishads.The Chief Minister underscored the need for imparting education to children in their mother tongues. Besides Urdu, para-teachers will also be engaged to teach Telugu and Bengali children.Minister of State for School and Mass Education Pratap Jena, Chief Secretary Bijay Kumar Patnaik, Development Commissioner R N Senapati, Principal Secretary in the Finance department Jugal Kishore Patnaik, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Aditya Prasad Padhi and Secretary in the Mass Education department Aparajita Sarangi attended the meeting.
