Of the total 1,11,688 coronavirus cases in the state, Telangana Health Minister Etala Rajender on Tuesday confirmed that two people have been reinfected with the deadly virus, raising fears about a second wave.
However, the Director of Public Health DR G Srinivasa Rao said that the suspected patients are asymptomatic. They are re-examining the samples and ascertaining whether the patients got reinfected after getting exposed to a new strain of virus.
Rao also expressed optimism over the Covid-19 situation in the state and claimed that the curve is expected to plateau September end, owing to a massive dip in daily infections in areas falling under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and other districts.
But he cautioned that they cannot let their guard down and added that there is a need to exercise more caution. His statement comes as the government gears up to announce a slew of relaxations under Unlock 4.0
Telangana registered its biggest single day spike with 3,018 new cases. The total death toll has climbed to 780, including 10 deaths registered in the last 24 hours.
Males account for more than 64% of the infected people, a majority of them falling under 31-40 age group.
Despite the heavy numbers, the state’s fatality rate stands at 0.69%, lower than the national average of 1.84%. GHMC officials have attributed this development to multiple factors including aggressive testing, tracking and treatment of Covid-19 patients. The state government set a new record by conducting 61,040 tests in a single day.
In the wake of incessant rains and flooding in several parts of the state, the Telangana government has also alerted people that vector borne-diseases are expected to rise and the symptoms for such ailments are akin to tha of Covid-19. They urged people with symptoms to immediately visit healthcare facilities.
