BHUBANESWAR: The State Government has set 2013 deadline for completing the drinking water projects in the four fluoride-hit districts. In several pockets of Angul, Nuapada, Balasore and Nayagarh districts, fluorosis has taken a toll on the local population necessitating the pipe-water projects by the Government. In Angul, Nayagarh and Balasore, the drinking water projects are expected to be completed by 2012 whereas the project at Nuapada’s Nuapalpada will take a year more, a review by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik here on Monday revealed. Naveen directed the authorities to expedite the drinking water projects. The problem with Balasore was typical since the depth of the privately-sunk tube-wells in Bhogarai and Jayrampur were found to be in the range of 80 ft to 100 ft and the water was high on fluoride-content. On the contrary, the 1,745 tube-wells sunk by the State Government were detected to have been fluoride-free.Excess fluoride content in drinking water leads to deformities, the most common being skeletal fluorosis. The Government has asked the district administration to sensitise the public about going for deeper tube-wells to avoid fluoride content in the water.
