27-year-old Soldier Dies in Kolkata of Suspected Nipah Virus Infection
The body fluid samples of the deceased jawan have been sent to the National Institute of Virology at Pune to confirm if it was Nipah virus infection, a defence official said.

Kolkata: A soldier suspected to be suffering from the Nipah virus died in Kolkata. The deadly virus has caused 13 deaths in Kerala.

The jawan, Seenu Prasad, was posted at Fort William. He had gone to his hometown in Kerala on a month’s leave and rejoined office on May 13.

The 27-year-old's medical condition, after his return, prompted the authorities to admit him to Command Hospital on May 20, the defence spokesperson said, adding that Prasad passed away five days later.

The hospital has sent body fluid samples of the deceased jawan to National Institute of Virology at Pune to confirm if it was Nipah virus infection, a defence official said.

"His body fluids have been sent to the National Institute of Virology at Pune to find out if it was a case of Nipah virus infection," he said.
