CHENNAI: Seven employees of a Tasmac bar were arrested for allegedly assaulting two men in Egmore on Sunday.Sources said Ebron of Purasawakkam and Maya Krishnan of Nungambakkam found themselves `30 short of the bill amount after ordering drinks at the wine shop located near a theatre in Egmore. The bar employees refused to allow them to leave the place unless they settled the amount and the duo called their friends Mahesh, Amir and Abhirami Balaji. The three men arrived at the bar and in the ensuing verbal altercation Mahesh and Amir were beaten up by some employees. Seven of them were arrested.Cops Suspended Over Stabbing IncidentA sub-inspector and constable have been placed on suspension after Sunday’s incident at the Mylapore police station, when a 30-year-old man sustained severe wounds after being stabbed by a former PMK councillor, inside the premises.The attack took place when the police summoned ex-councillor Manivannan, whose daughter Deepa (name changed) allegedly eloped with Bilal on December 2, and the absconding youth’s brother, Ahmed Basha (30) for inquiry. There were heated arguments between both sides and in a fit of rage, Manivannan took the muzzle-loaded rifle of constable Venkatesan and stabbed Basha. Manivannan was arrested on attempt to murder charges, while the injured man was taken to hospital. Sources said CoP J K Tripathy ordered the suspension of sub-inspector Kandasamy and constable Venkatesan for negligence of duty. A memo was served on inspector D Purushottaman.50 Sovereigns Robbed From Marriage HallAround 50 sovereigns of gold jewellery belonging to the bride were reported stolen at a marriage hall in Thiruvottiyur on Sunday.Sources said the reception of S Vijayababu (30) and S Vijayalakshmi alias Nadia (26) was held at a private wedding hall on Thiruvottiyur High Road on Sunday evening. The wedding was scheduled for Monday morning. Meanwhile, around 50 sovereigns of the bride’s jewels kept in a bag were found stolen on Sunday night.The bride’s father Selvakumar lodged a complaint at the New Washermenpet police station and senior police officials arrived at the hall and conducted a search. Despite the theft, the marriage went ahead to the relief of the bride’s family.
