THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A secret bond between crime and sport underlines the thrilling documentary ‘The Two Escobars’ screened at the 16th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) here. The makers - Jeff Zimbalist and Michael Zimbalist - call the shots on real incidents which led to the rise and fall of two Colombians, Pablo Escobar and Andres Escobar to unearth the ‘Narco-Soccer’ story.Interestingly, Pablo is a mafia kingpin, who can be compared to Don Vito Corleone- the Godfather, while the ill-fated Andres was the captain of the Colombian team that was knocked out of the 1994 World Cup football in the very first round.The stories of the two Escobars are recounted with the help of interviews mainly with Pablo’s cousin Jaime Garvira, his mother Dona Hermilda, the teammates of Andres including Valderrama and Asprilla and his girlfriend Pamela Cascardo.It is well-knitted with news clippings of some real life incidents and footage of famous football matches. It was at a time when Colombia’s murder rate recorded the highest in the world that the football team attained new heights of glory.
